Arabic Summer School - Makkah 2023

Arabic Summer School 2023

Al-Salam Institute will be taking a group of students to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, for a spoken Arabic programme, hosted by the Centre for Da’wah and Cooperation, Makkah. The programme will begin with one week of live online teaching, followed by just over two weeks of in-person classes in Makkah. Students will be able to benefit from the teaching and company of Shaykh Akram Nadwi on this course.

An open evening for the Arabic Summer School took place on Thursday, May 25th, and those interested can email residentials@alsalam.ac.uk to request a link to view the recording.

The Arabic Summer School has been designed for students on our Islamic Scholarship Programmes to be able to improve their applied Arabic skills (fusha) and benefit from an immersive environment. Students who have attended in the past have greatly improved their conversational Arabic, including listening and speaking skills, which in turn has also strengthened their reading and writing skills. Fifteen days spent in Makkah will give our students a chance to not only study the language, but consistently practise and reinforce their learning outside the classroom. This is an incredible opportunity for all of those able to attend.

We have designed this residential programme to be both as affordable as possible and one that focuses more on companionship and Arabic conversational practise rather than luxury accommodation or solely textual learning. Students will be able to stay in on-campus dorms or off-campus (this is required for group/family stays). All meals are included for on-campus students.

We have a maximum capacity of 40 students on this programme, so we recommend students secure their place as soon as they can.

On-Campus Accommodation

Student accommodation will be based on shared rooms in male-only/female-only non-serviced apartments. There will be 3-4 students per room. Off-campus attendance is possible, but we strongly encourage students to stay on-campus. Please note, it will not be possible for students’ families to attend the classes.

Food

All meals are included for on-campus students. The venue provides breakfast, lunch and a light dinner. For off-campus students, only lunch will be available at the teaching venue.

Dietary Requirements: Unfortunately, we will be unable to accommodate dietary requirements/intolerances. For students wishing to attend who may have specific dietary requirements, they will need to make personal arrangements for mealtimes.

On-Campus Transfers

Arriving: 12th August from Jeddah Airport to accommodation. Umrah will be conducted immediately upon arrival to Makkah.

Departing:  27th August from the accommodation to Jeddah Airport.

If a student cannot make the above transfer timings, they will be required to get a taxi from Jeddah airport to the accommodation. Students can also take the high speed Haramain train running between Jeddah Airport and Makkah.

Off-Campus Transfers

Airport transfers are not included for off-campus participants.

Visa

Students should apply for a tourist visa via https://visa.visitsaudi.com/

Umrah

Students will be taking part in umrah upon arrival. Students should therefore be in ihram prior to arrival in Jeddah. More information on umrah will be provided upon enrolment.

Mahrams

Female students that would like to bring their mahram may apply to stay off-campus with their family. Mahrams are not required for students with a tourist visa.

For any further enquiries, please email residentials@alsalam.ac.uk
