Winter Retreat 2025
Join us for the Winter Student Retreat, a few days dedicated to study, reflection, and good company.
At Al-Salam Institute, Our Student Retreats in the UK not only allow students to further develop their knowledge, but also to spend time in suhba (beneficial company) with their teachers and fellow students. We run two retreats during the academic year: the Spring Retreat and the Winter Retreat. These residential trips are an invaluable opportunity to ground ourselves in an increasingly disconnected world.
The aim is simple; to spend time together with pure intentions. We can learn so much from one another when our hearts are in the right place. Taking some intentional time out in nature and away from our busy lives and routines can provide us with the chance to heighten our self-awareness and develop small practices to implement upon our return. Our teachers, including Shaykh Akram, will also be present and look forward to spending time with their students, inshallah.
We have designed these retreats to be both as affordable as possible and for them to focus more on companionship and experience rather than luxury accommodation or solely textual learning. Students will be able to stay in on-campus dorms (single occupancy – limited no. of rooms available) or off-campus (nearby hotels are recommended especially for group/family stays). All meals are included for all students.

Key Information
Dates: Thursday 11 December – Sunday 14 December
Theme: Seeking Spiritual Refinement
The theme of the Winter Retreat 2025 will be Seeking Spiritual Refinement. Shaykh Akram will draw on teachings from the Quran, sunnah and Madarij al-Salikin to expound upon topics that speak to the heart. Madarij al-Salikin, translated as Ranks of the Divine Seekers, is a voluminous work that covers topics such as worship, Divine guidance, hope, tawbah, spiritual stations, worldly attachments and many other virtues and vices. Shaykh Akram will choose relevant chapters to provide guidance, reflection and food for thought for all students in attendance.
Winter Retreat: The Winter Retreat will take place at the end of Term One in December.
Graduation Ceremony: The retreat will also feature our annual Alimiyyah graduation ceremony, an occasion for our students to hear from our graduates and learn from their journeys, many of whom have studied at the institute for an average of seven years. This will be a wonderful opportunity for inspiration and reflection.
Please note: priority for on-campus dorms will be given to students of the Islamic Scholarship Programmes. Previous students of the Islamic Scholarship Programmes are also welcome to apply.
Venue: Islamic Foundation, Markfield, Leicestershire
Ratby Ln, Markfield LE67 9SY
Teaching: ASI teachers, including Shaykh Akram Nadwi, will also be present and looking forward to meeting their students, inshaAllah.

Programme and Schedule
Q) What should I expect from the Student Retreat in terms of the programme and schedule?
-> While the final programme is yet to be confirmed, we can offer a general outline based on previous years. This year’s retreat is expected to follow a similar structure.
The retreat typically begins on Thursday evening, with check-in around 5:00pm, followed by a welcome session, dinner, and introductory talks by Shaykh Akram and other teachers. The opening evening usually runs until about 10:00pm.
Each day begins with Fajr prayer at the on-site masjid, followed by an optional session featuring either hadith reading or tajwid. Breakfast is served between 8:00 and 9:00am. Morning sessions with Shaykh Akram generally run from 9:00am to 1:00pm and include tafsir of selected surahs and readings from classical texts, often centred on themes of spirituality and self-development. While the exact texts cannot be confirmed in advance, further details may be shared closer to the date or listed on our website.
Lunch is served from 1:00 to 2:00pm. Afternoons are usually dedicated to workshops, discussions, or practical activities such as self-defence sessions or countryside walks (weather permitting). Evenings often include Q&A sessions, group activities like quizzes and prize giveaways, and informal opportunities to engage with teachers.
On Saturday evening, during the Winter Student Retreat, a graduation ceremony and formal dinner are typically held between 5:00 and 9:00pm. Sunday morning follows a similar structure to previous days, with the retreat concluding after closing reflections and check-out by 4:00pm.
A detailed schedule will be shared closer to the time, but we hope this gives you a clear idea of what to expect from the retreat experience.
Graduation Ceremony/Dinner
Q) Do I need to purchase tickets for the graduation dinner?
→ If you are attending the retreat, tickets for the graduation dinner are included. If you are attending the dinner only, you will need to purchase a ticket separately.
Q) Should I bring formal clothes for the graduation?
→ Most students choose to wear formal or semi-formal clothing for the graduation evening, although it is not mandatory. Graduating students will need to order their gowns through our official gown supplier.
Q) What does the graduation evening look like?
→ The graduation usually takes place on Saturday evening between 5:00 and 10:00pm. One of the halls is decorated and transformed into a formal graduation venue, where presentations are given by teachers and graduating students.
