The Beautiful Names of God
‘He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, Knower of the unseen and the witnessed. He al-Rahman, al-Rahim. He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, al-Malik, al-Quddus, al-Salam, al-Mu’min, al-Muhaymin, al-Aziz, al-Jabbar, al-Mutakabbir. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him. He is Allah, al-Khaliq, al-Bari’, al-Musawwir; to Him belong al-Asma’ al-Husna. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is al-Aziz, al-Hakim.’
Quran 59:22-24
The Beautiful Names of Allah are indicators of the vast and limitless nature of God. Found in both the Quran and Hadith literature, they enumerate attributes of The One who tells us that, ‘There is nothing like unto Him’ (Q42:11). By listing, learning and invoking these names believers have the potential to draw closer to God, become aware of how He describes Himself and how He manifests in our lives, whilst also remaining cognisant of His ineffability. They can act at ropes we hold on to throughout life, strengthening our relationship with Allah. Knowing these names is of immeasurable benefit, being known as ‘The Most Beautiful Names’ (al-Asma’ al-Husna).
Many scholars throughout the ages have taught the meanings of these names in various ways. In this 2-day short course, Shaykh Akram Nadwi will be exploring some of the features of the Beautiful Names of God In light of their context in revelation and Arabic linguistics.
