This course will cover the main areas of Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh), and the historic, social and religious factors in the development of Islamic legal schools.
Introduction to Hadith Classification and Nomenclature
In this course students will become acquainted with the most important terms in hadith criticism and gain a practical understanding of what these terms mean when applied in hadith analysis. The course follows Mabadi fi Usul al-Hadith, an introductory text to the science written by Shaykh Akram Nadwi.
Introduction to Quranic Exegesis and Interpretation
This course provides students with the essential aspects of Scripture and rules of interpretation, so as to avoid erring in one’s understanding.
Introduction to Arabic Grammar
In this introduction to Arabic grammar, the text (‘Mabadi al-Nahw’) will be read in Arabic along with its translation, commentary and relevance to the wider field. There will be some discussion on the development of ‘Nahw’ as an independent field of study, with a focus on the different grammatical rules and patterns of the Arabic language.
Introduction to Arabic Morphology
This course will cover the main areas of Arabic morphology in a systematic and easy-to-follow manner. Students will cover the classifications of verbs with regards to time, tense, mood, and different forms. They will be provided with a basic knowledge of the varying grammatical morphology, and an overview of the historical development of the subject as an independent area.

Introduction to Hadith and Isnad
This course provides an overview of the hadith sciences. It introduces the subject of hadith as a source of Islamic law and offers a history of its development and taxonomy, and how they were compiled and recorded through chains of narrations. The course begins with a discussion of the renowned hadith collections and the compilers behind these works, and concludes by describing the rigorous methods employed in evaluating isnad (chains of narration).
Al-Muqaddimah fi Usul al-Tafsir
This course focuses on the essential principles of Qur’anic exegesis posited by Ibn Taymiyyah in his Al-Muquaddimah fi Usul al-Tafsir text. The text promotes a methodological framework of Tafsir that provides exegetes with the tools and principles to understand and unravel the Divine intent behind Quranic verses.
History of Early Religious and Political Sects
This course provides students with a profound understanding of the historical, theological and political developments of the Muslim community that led to formation of the early Muslim sects. It considers the origins of the theological positions of the Khawarij, Shia, and Murji’a in the 2nd centuries, as well as the subsequent development of the Mu’tazila as a fully realised theological school.
Al-Muwatta and the Books of the Four Imams

In this course – the first part of the Bustan al-Muhhaddithin series – students will primarily study the biography of Mālik ibn Anas ibn Mālik al-Asbahī, and analyse and evaluate the methodological framework and the different forms of transmission used in his renowned text: Al-Muwatta. The biographies, hadith compilations, and methodologies attributed to Imams Abu Hanifa, Shafi’i, and Ahmad ibn Hanbal will also be looked at, in addition to their most prominent students and transmissions.

In this course, students will go through the third and final part of the Bustan al-Muhaddithin anthology, covering compilations such as the Sahih of Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban, and the al-Mustadrak of al-Hakim. The course provides an understanding of the differences in methodology, classifications, and definitions employed by the muhaddithin of differing tiers.

Additionally, the collections of hadith scholars such as al-Daraqutni, al-Bayhaqi, and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi will be studied and assessed for their respective accuracy, purposes, and methodologies.

Imam Abu Hanifa: His Life and Legacy
This course focuses on the life and legacy of Abu Hanifa, and surveys the evolution of the Hanafi school in different regions of the Islamic world. It looks at the traditional sources and discusses both the history and legend about the imam. The course evaluates the particular pattern of reasoning that distinguished Abu Hanifa’s fiqh from other methodologies.
Qiyas, Ijma and Ijtihad
This course is designed to give students a deeper understanding of the conceptualisations and implementation of ijma’ and qiyas in Islamic legal theory and, in particular, as sources and methods utilised during the process of ijtihad.
Rituals of Burial
This course covers the spiritual and ethical aspects, and rulings relating to funeral rites, such as washing and shrouding the body, the janazah (funeral prayer), and the burial rites.

This course addresses the etiquettes, manners and appropriate intentions that have been recommended for seekers of knowledge. This topic has been addressed in a wide variety of books that directly deal with the subject of attaining religious knowledge. By garnering lessons from a number of these scholarly works, and the stories contained within, students are expected to leave having a deeper understanding of the inner state and outward manifestation of a refined intention when seeking knowledge.
Physiology of Menstruation and Rules of Purification
This course provides an introduction to the topic of menstruation and is split into three parts (Islamic law, physiological aspects and Q&A).
Rules of Quran Recitation
This course introduces beginners to the rudimentary elements of tajwid. It will ensure that students are able to recite the last ten surahs of the Quran correctly and able to apply its rules throughout the Holy Scripture.
Nukhbat al-Fikr
This two-day intensive seminar on Nukhbat al-Fikr covers the principles of prophetic traditions as penned in the small primer of Ibn Hajr. Students will apply the terminology, classification methods, and tools of authenticity to analyse the veracity of specific hadith narrations. In addition, the biographies of major hadith narrators will be evaluated as well as the relative strengths and weaknesses of the collective communities of hadith scholars in the early generations of Islam.
Islam, Women's Rights and Feminism
This lecture looks at how Islam perceives the role of women in the contemporary context. It will focus on the rights and status afforded to women in Islam and the influence of different cultures and traditions, and their associated stereotypes. It provides a critical analysis of feminism in the context of modernity.
Orientalism and Islamic Studies
This course provides students with a detailed introduction to the field of Western Islamic academia. It engages with orientalist methodologies and critiques of Quranic and Hadith studies.
Misquoting Muhammad on Women
This course and extensive question and answer session seeks to clarify critical questions on the treatment and status of women in Islam. The course will address some of the key Quran and Hadiths texts that are often misquoted or misinterpreted to prove that women have an inferior status in Islam.
