Overview
This course aims to cover the essential legal aspects of ritual worship based on the book ‘Al-Fiqh al-Islami’ by Shaykh Akram Nadwi. Al-Fiqh al-Islami is an original 2-volume monograph in the English language covering: purification (taharah), prayer (salah), funeral rites (including salat al-janazah), annual alms (zakat), fasting (sawm) and pilgrimage (hajj) according to the Hanafi madhhab. This course will introduce students to how practically perform four of the five pillars of Islam in light of traditional scholarship and within the contemporary context. It will equip students to be able to fulfil their ritual obligations and understand how to practically navigate some of the challenges faced around these areas of Islamic law today.

The Author
Dr. Mohammad Akam Nadwi is a graduate of the world-renowned Nadwat al-ʿUlamāʾ, India, who specialises in Ḥadīth literature. He completed his PhD in Arabic Grammar from the University of Lucknow and has since authored and translated over 30 books on the Arabic language and Islamic Sciences. Dr Akram Nadwi worked as a Research Fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies for over 20 years and is currently the Principal and Senior Lecturer of Advanced Islamic Sciences at Al-Salam Institute (ASI), London.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to:
- Demonstrate a good understanding of the basic legal rulings related to Purification, Salah, Zakat, Fasting & Hajj.
- Identify the difference between the obligatory, recommended, permissible, disliked and prohibited acts rulings pertaining to ritual worship (ibadat) according to the Hanafi madhhab.
- Broadly understand the role and development of the Hanafi madhhab in Islamic law.
