Theory & Case Studies in Intertextuality

Course Description

This one-day course seeks to introduce students to the notion of Quranic intertextuality especially as it pertains to the Bible and the Biblical tradition. It will explore questions of how and why the Qur’an ‘converses’ with previous scriptures and the sophistication of that dialogue. In addition to being introduced to matters of theory, students will also be taken through several case studies that highlight the exegetical and theological value of an intertextual study of the Qur’an but also pitfalls to be aware of. Along the way, students will be introduced to some useful resources and hermeneutical insights that will aid them in their personal study of the Qur’an in this respect.

About the Lecturer

Dr Saqib Hussain completed his DPhil at the University of Oxford on the relationship between the Qur’an and the Biblical tradition. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, where he teaches courses on the Qur’an, Islam, and comparative theology. His current research interests include surah structure, the Qur’an and late antiquity, and Qur’anic law.
