What do you have?

By Shaykh Mohammad Akram Nadwi, Oxford

An Indian cinema star once said to a little boy “I have a luxury vehicle, a towering mansion, and millions of rupees – what do you have?”

The boy responded “I have my mother”.

When people boast to each other about positions and jobs, abilities and capabilities, riches and wealth, accomplishments and achievements and compete with each other in these matters, saying: “We have a king and a sultan, or ministerial and presidential positions, or troops and armies, or nuclear weapons and atomic bombs, or lofty palaces and skyscrapers, or towering buildings and tall towers, or magnificent luxury vehicles, or vast riches”, the submitting slave (of Allah) says: “With me is my Lord”

Khaqani – one of the great Farsi poets of the 6th century Hijri – says:

“It has become apparent to Khaqani after 30 years
That a moment with Allah, most High, is better than the kingdom of Sulaiman”

Without doubt, no one has ever been given a kingdom greater than that of Sulaiman, for mankind, jinn, animals and birds, and the very winds were under his order and command. The kings and sultans of the world, magnificent emperors and great warriors and conquerors do not come close to Sulaiman’s power, bravery, splendour and might, and Khaqani was guided to composing these words, no truer a statement could have been made – that a moment with Allah, most High, is better than the kingdom of Sulaiman

Mahmoud al-Ghaznawi was the mightiest king of his time, the richest of sultans; he had fought seventeen battles in India, amassing vast amounts of wealth, and immense riches, He had a slave named Ayaz whom he loved dearly, which angered the ministers, governors and courtiers. They would talk amongst themselves: “How could the king shower all this affection upon a simple slave of lesser status than them, with their being people of intelligence, bravery and initiative?”

Their gossip continued and Mahmoud came to know of their designs, so he summoned them and said: “You have established the pillars of my kingdom, provided it with support, laid its foundations, and extended and secured its borders; as such, I wish to reward you, so have opened for you today my treasure troves and stores – whatever each one of you places your hand on, it is yours!”

They rushed in putting their hands on valuable stones, expensive jewellery and priceless pearls; but Ayaz stood up and placed his hand on Mahmoud’s head.

Mahmoud said to him: “Why are you standing here whilst all the people are racing one another, competing with each other to acquire these treasures?

He responded: “I have placed my hand on the king; if the king has become mine, then everything is mine.” Thus the people came to know of Ayaz’s intelligence and virtue.

And so it is for the Muslim slave – it has become firm in his heart and established in his mind, and he has complete certainty, that when his Lord is with him, then he has whatever is in the heavens and earth. He is better than any creation, of great value and increased in rank. Amir Khusrow, one of the great Indian poets (8th century AH) writes:

“You said your value was like that of the two worlds
Raise your price, you’ve valued yourself too cheaply”
