Al-Muhaddithat: The Women Scholars of Islam

Al-Muhaddithat Book Campaign

ASI is launching an exclusive book campaign to enable individuals, researchers and institutions to gain access to Shaykh Akram Nadwi’s world famous Al-Wafa’ bi Asma’ al-Nisa’. The 43-volume compilation of female hadith scholars and narrators is a specialist work in the field of Hadith studies that just begins to scratch the surface when it comes to female scholarly contributions in Islamic studies.

Twenty years of research and thousands of muhaddithat later, this unique contribution is finally available and yet understandably difficult to access. This is why ASI is launching a campaign in which you can not only purchase Al-Wafa’ but also donate a copy to a researcher, institution or mosque. This enables the dissemination of the knowledge contained within this truly unique multi-volume book.

‘I do not know of another religious tradition in which women were so central, so present and so active in its formative history.’

– Dr Mohammad Akram Nadwi | Author of Al-Wafa’ bi Asma’ al-Nisa’ and Principal of Al-Salam Institute

What is Al-Wafa’ bi Asma’ al-Nisa’?

Al-Wafa’ bi Asma’ al-Nisa’ is Shaykh Akram Nadwi’s phenomenal 43-volume compendium of female hadith scholars, teachers and narrators that hail from all over the Muslim world for over 1400 years. Over two decades Shaykh Akram compiled lists, descriptions and biographies of approximately 10,000 Muslim women who have contributed to our knowledge and understanding of the Hadith sciences. Shaykh Akram conducted painstaking analysis of historical documents including biographical dictionaries, ijazat, class registers and glowing testimonies from the most revered ‘ulama’ about their female teachers. This unique work gives us an insight into women from the time of the Prophet (ﷺ) right through to the modern era that have contributed to the preservation of his ahadith (ﷺ), without which we would be lost.

Yet, this is just the beginning. With so much more work to be done in order to better understand the role and contribution of Muslim women to so many other branches of the Islamic sciences, this work is essential for scholars and researchers of Islamic intellectual history.

Questions about the Dictionary of women scholars

By Shaykh Akram Nadwi

Two questions have often been put to me since the publication in Arabic of al-Wafa’ bi asma’ al nisa’ (Biographical dictionary of women narrators of hadith). This work was published in 43 volumes by Dar al-Minhaj from Jeddah in January 2021. The English translation of its muqaddima (preface) was first published in 2007 under the title al-Muhaddithat: the women scholars in Islam …
